Unschooling Math With CTCMath

One of the things I love most about Unschooling is how the lifestyle advocates for children learning at their own pace. For those of you who don’t know, two of my children have special needs, Autism and Dyslexia. One also has multiple learning challenges. When I am seeking out resources and websites the kids might enjoy, I lean toward those that are interactive with a multi-sensory approach.

Unschooling Math with CTCMath

Enter CTCMath. I was given a year free and am being compensated for my time. I am also giving you my honest thoughts on the program.

Trying to find one program that multiple children can not only use but enjoy is a difficult task.
Now you may be thinking “I thought unschoolers can’t and don’t use curriculum.” Not true at all. If you’ve been with me for a while, you know my kids learn organically but I’ve also always used websites and programs from the beginning as well.

I was shocked by how much all three kids enjoy this math program! Seeing them smile and their faces light up when they master a new skill makes me very happy. Rewards and scores are new to my kids with this program, but they like it, a lot! One of them even figured out how the scoring system works and explained to me how they were able to average a higher score by going through the lessons again if they didn’t pass it the first time.

How CTCMath Works

CTCMath is a K-12 program and works on phones, computers, and laptops. You can use it at home or on the go. Each family member can have their own account with a username and password on the website. There are also placement tests if you choose to use them in order of short, standard, and comprehensive. One of the things we love most are the short, animated videos with a clear explanation on one topic before each lesson. If your child gets stuck during the lesson, they can toggle back to the video for reference since they two are side by side. Each lesson is about 7-10 minutes long. Your child can do the work online or you can print worksheets. As you’ve seen above, my son likes to do the work online and write it in a notebook.

Rewards System

Parents can go into the dashboard and assign tasks, change what a passing score is for each child, or grade level. If your child does the work online, they are given immediate feedback for each lesson. No loud buzzing if the answer is wrong, but the system simply tells them the right answer and moves onto the next question. I love how each lesson builds on the one before. Your child will be given a certificate and score as they work through the lessons.
Gold, silver, or bronze, and you will receive an email with a pdf to print the certificate if you want.

Children learn at their own pace

When you have children with special needs and unschool, they can sometimes feel behind their peers because they learn differently in general, and from their friends in school. I have enjoyed watching their confidence grow over the past several months with this program.
Children can go back to skills they may not fully understand as well as skip ahead to try new ones.
At the end of a lesson, they can rate from 1-5 stars their understanding of the topic.
Another unexpected thing my kids do, challenge themselves to get the same score throughout a topic. Instead of asking me for help, sometimes they ask each other, which I think is super cute.

Finals Thoughts From My Kids

Samuel : It’s easy and the more I play the more I learn. The times tables are my favorite.

Ava: I like how easy it is, and you can go back and forth between the videos and lessons.
You can pick which lessons to work on, so if you already know something, you can skip to one you don’t know.

Nakiah: I like that it’s easy to use. I like watching the video first because it helps me understand how to do the work.
